OctThuHB330- Beginning Hand Building
October 6 @ 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm
This class teaches beginning skills in Hand Building and is a great introduction to working with clay. Even if you are more interested in learning the wheel you may want to begin with this class because it will give you an advantage if you take a wheel class later on. You will learn to make both decorative and functional things from stoneware clay using only your hands and a few tools. (This class does not include instruction in pottery wheel.) The class fee is for the whole class which meets once a week for four weeks. The class is repeatable as the instructor will continue to teach new skills and techniques as your own skill grows. Learning the basics in ceramics is similar to learning a new sport and requires practice to become proficient. For that reason, studio time is available for current and prior students whenever there are no classes scheduled at $10/hour you will just need to verify open times before coming in. Included in the price of the class is enough clay for average usage, all firing and bucket glazes, and a shelf to store your items during the class. There is a minimum age of 10 to take the Hand Building classes and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on the first day. The first day of the class gives the student a lot of information, approx 30-45 minutes of orientation, so please do not sign up for a class if you cannot make the first meeting. A different skill is covered for each class meeting, missing any class time puts the student behind and it is difficult to catch up. Any pieces made by the student that are left behind for more than 90 days will be discarded unless prior provisions have been made. If a student misses any classes I will try to slot them into another class within the same week schedule but this is not always possible.
*** A bleach solution will be used to disinfect tools and surfaces between students and sessions. Please bring an old towel you will need one frequently to wipe your hands and surfaces during class and paper towels will not be provided. You will want to trim your fingernails short as longer nails complicate learning this skill. If you have an apron that you’d like to wear feel free to bring it. If you have previously purchased a gift certificate for a class please call the studio or sign up in person for your class. The following information outlines our refund policy:
